One person was killed and nine others wounded in a mass shooting and fiery car crash at a funeral home in suburban Baltimore on Tuesday night, police said.
Charles Graham Jr., a 26-year-old Baltimore resident, was identified Wednesday by police as the deceased victim.
Eight of the nine wounded victims remained hospitalized into Wednesday afternoon, Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough said. The wounded victims were identified as seven males and two females, all between the ages of 14 and 27.
No suspects were identified or in custody. Cops said they worked through the night examining the chaotic scene in Towson, about 8 miles north of Baltimore’s inner harbor.
“This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County,” county executive Johnny Olszewski said. “These types of incidents are unheard of here, and so it really shocks the conscience.”
Officers responded to the scene around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday to find an SUV on fire and on its side next to the funeral home. Investigators believe all 10 victims were inside the vehicle, with nine being struck by gunshots in the incident, McCullough said.
“It appears that the individuals in this case somehow knew one another and that this incident was intentional and targeted,” the chief said. He described the incident as an “ongoing, rolling type of gun situation that led up to the funeral home.”
Gunfire had been reported throughout the neighborhood before culminating in the deadly scene at the funeral home, police said. A neighbor told the Baltimore Sun she heard a loud boom and then the sounds of gunfire near her apartment.
Investigators said the incident was likely not related to the building, which had a service much earlier Tuesday and was not scheduled for use again until Thursday, the Sun reported.
