One person was killed and several others wounded in a shooting at Tuskegee University during the Alabama school’s homecoming weekend, authorities said.
The victim who died was identified only as a “non-university individual” in a statement from Tuskegee. At least two students were among the wounded victims.
No suspects have been identified or arrested.
“Emergency responders, along with campus and local law enforcement, have secured the scene,” Tuskegee said. “The university is in the process of completing student accountability and notifying parents.”
Cops responded to reports of a shooting around 1:40 a.m. on the campus about 35 miles east of Montgomery, AL.com reported.
Local police were already near the scene because they were responding to a different shooting nearby that left two people wounded, according to AL.com. Authorities did not say what sparked the gunfire.
“Some idiots started shooting,” Tuskegee city police chief Patrick Mardis told AL.com. “You couldn’t get the emergency vehicles in there, there were so many people there.”
Tuskegee University, most famous for helping train Black military pilots during World War II, was celebrating its 100th homecoming over the weekend. The school’s football team faced Miles College and lost 37-7.
“Today, our hearts are with the Tuskegee family as they face the tragic aftermath of the recent shooting on campus,” Miles said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to those impacted and pray for healing and justice. Miles College stands with you in this difficult time.”
Sunday’s incident was the third deadly shooting at a southern historically Black university’s homecoming event this fall. On Oct. 12, one person was killed in a shooting at Tennessee State University in Nashville, and one week later one person was killed in a shooting at Albany State University in Georgia.
