10 injured in police motorcycle crash at California holiday parade


At least 10 people were injured Saturday after a police officer crashed a motorcycle into the crowd at a California holiday parade.

The incident occurred at the Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade around 6 p.m. when officer lost control of the bike while attempting a trick. Witnesses told The Desert Sun the officer was trying to pop a wheelie and the motorcycle slid into the crowd without him on it.

Ten people — including the officer, whose hand was reportedly severed — were rushed to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A 2-year-old child was among the injured.

“I feel terrible about the accident and injuries to the very people we protect,” Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills said on Facebook. “I am deeply concerned and hope for a thorough recovery.”

The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigating.
