A 10-year-old boy was fatally shot at a home in South Jersey on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
Cops said the child died from a single gunshot wound to the head at the residence in Washington Township, Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI reported. He has not been publicly identified.
The boy was home alone at the time of the shooting, police sources told NJ.com. Investigators are not seeking any suspects in the case.
“The investigation is ongoing and we’re not prepared to issue any official comment at this point,” Gloucester County Prosecutor’s office investigator Tom Gilbert told the outlet. However, there is no further risk to the community, officials said.
Officers responded to the scene, about 15 miles south of Philadelphia, just before 2:30 p.m., according to local NBC affiliate WCAU. Despite life-saving efforts from first responders, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child was a student at Birches Elementary School, which is near the home where he was found dead, local CBS affiliate KYW reported. The school was briefly locked down Tuesday after the gunshot nearby.
“Our hearts go out to the student’s family and loved ones, and we mourn this sudden loss deeply,” Washington Township School District said in a statement.
