12-year-old boy in stolen SUV pulled over at 90 mph

A 12-year-old Michigan boy is accused of driving 90 mph in a stolen SUV when he was stopped by police around 4 a.m.

The alleged auto thief had a 12-gauge shotgun, ammunition and marijuana in that vehicle when he was pulled over by authorities in Clare County Sunday, according to MLive.

The 2000 Chevrolet Blazer he was driving reportedly belongs to the boy’s parents in nearby Grand Traverse County. They reported their son had taken the vehicle and were tracking it on U.S. Route 127. That helped law enforcement make the unusual traffic stop more than an hour later.

“Our deputy happened to be in a good position to intercept the young man and he pulled right over,” Clare County Sheriff’s Lt. Aaron Miller said.

Investigators told the prosecutor’s office the unlicensed driver was “joy riding,” according to Wood TV. Local outlet WJRT said officials haven’t yet decided if criminal charges will be filed.

Authorities don’t believe the boy had plans to use the shotgun.
