16-year-old shot to death at Chipotle near Temple University

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed inside a Chipotle near Temple University’s campus in North Philadelphia, police said.

Gunfire erupted inside the fast food restaurant around 5 p.m. Monday, the same day students and staff returned to campus for the first day of the spring 2026 semester. When officers arrived on the scene, located on North 12 Street and Montgomery Avenue, they discovered the victim in the bathroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, NBC News 10 reported.

He was pronounced dead a short time later and his name has not been released.

Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said the teen was with two other people at the Chipotle prior the shooting. Surveillance video inside restaurant shows him requesting the bathroom key and then going to the bathroom with one other person moments before the gunfire.

Authorities on Tuesday continued to investigate the shooting at Chipotle, which is on the ground floor of The View at Montgomery apartments, not far Temple’s Student Center and TECH Center. It was crowded with people when the gunfire occurred, Small said, adding that all witnesses present were being interviewed.

A person of interest was taken into custody shortly after the deadly incident, though it is unclear whether they are being considered a suspect at this time.

“The loss of life to gun violence is a profound tragedy, and there are no words that can make sense of it,” Temple University President John Fry and Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police Jennifer Griffin said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones.”

Chipotle in a statement said it was cooperating with the investigation. A motive is unknown at this time.
