A mass shooting at a party in rural North Carolina left two people dead and 11 others wounded, officials said Saturday.
The gathering, described by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office as a “large party on Dixon Drive, just outside Maxton,” had at least 150 people in attendance, who fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
“At this time, 13 individuals have been shot, with two confirmed deceased and several others critically injured,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said in a statement early Saturday.
The shooting appears to have been an isolated incident, and there’s not believed to any current threat to the community.
Details about the victims or possible suspects were not immediately released Saturday. No arrests had been made as of Saturday afternoon.
Anyone with information about the incident or who attended the party is urged to contact investigators by calling (910) 671-3100 or emailing sheriff.wilkins@robesoncountync.gov.
Maxton, a town of just over 2,100 people near the border with South Carolina, is about 100 miles southwest of Raleigh.
