A shooting at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in northwest Dallas left two people dead and two others wounded, officials said Wednesday, adding the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident unfolded shortly after 6:30 a.m. local time, when Dallas police responded to a call to assist an officer in the 8100 block of North Stemmons Freeway.
The suspected shooter, who has not been identified, fired from an “adjacent building,” Dallas police said in a news release.
“Two people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. One victim died at the scene,” police said. “The suspect is deceased.”
More than 40 police units responded to the scene, according to a Dallas Morning News report citing a Dallas police call log.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the shooting in a post on X.
“Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities,” Noem wrote.
She said the motive is not yet known but confirmed the suspect died by suicide.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons told CNN earlier on Wednesday that three people had been shot and were taken to a hospital.
Sources told the network two of the victims were detainees.
April Foran, a spokesperson for Parkland Hospital, confirmed that the hospital had received two patients from the ICE facility incident. Their condition was not immediately known.
