Two Pennsylvania state troopers pursuing a suspect Wednesday night were wounded in a firefight, which also left the suspect dead, authorities said.
The troopers were responding to a reported theft at a Dick’s Sporting Goods just outside of Chambersburg when the chaos kicked off shortly after 6 p.m., Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement.
When troopers arrived on the scene, the suspects were fleeing in a van with Maryland plates and traveling toward nearby Interstate 81.
The troopers gave chase, which only came to an end when the fleeing vehicle hit spike strips set up more than 10 miles away near Greencastle, police said. At that point, two women obeyed commands to exit the vehicle, and they were taken into custody without further incident.
However, a third, male suspect began shooting at troopers, striking two of them, authorities said. The troopers fired back, fatally wounding the gunman. He’s been identified in a court affidavit as 31-year-old Lamar Lorenzo Foy.
The wounded troopers were meanwhile rushed to Wellspan York Hospital, where one remained in serious condition on Thursday, police said. The other officer was treated and released Thursday morning. Neither of their identities have been disclosed.
The two women in the van — identified as Amir Loren Swift and Giani Jaida McGowan, both 21 and from Baltimore — have since been charged with retail theft and drug offenses.
According to charging documents, they’re accused of stealing more than $1,000 worth of clothing from Dick’s. A search of the van also turned up THC, plastic bags filled with powder, money and scales, investigators said.
Both women, who were denied bail, are being held at the Franklin County Jail, a supervisor said.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
