2 people, 1 dog killed in 4-car wreck outside NJ elementary school

Two people were killed in a nasty four-car crash outside a New Jersey elementary school on Sunday night, forcing a North Jersey district to delay classes on Monday, authorities said.

The wreck occurred around 8:30 p.m. Sunday outside Haskell Elementary School in Wanaque, according to WPIX. Two people and a dog were killed, the local fire chief told the station.

Photos from the scene showed four cars crumpled together and a smashed pet carrier in the back of a sedan.

Police have not publicly released much information about the crash, which occurred on Ringwood Avenue, about 25 miles northwest of Central Park.

Though the crash happened on Sunday night, it was serious enough that investigators had to work through the night and into the morning to clear the scene, WCBS reported. Because it happened right in front of Haskell Elementary, the entire Wanaque School District started on a 90-minute delay Monday.

“Expect delays concerning the morning commute,” Wanaque police wrote on Facebook. “Due to the serious nature of the accident, the Wanaque Police Department requests any persons with information contact this department at 973-835-5600.”

School officials thought of canceling classes district-wide if the scene was not cleared in the morning, WPIX reported. Instead, the school day began at 10:15 a.m.
