2 Portland cops shot; suspect still at large

Police in Portland, Ore. are looking for a man believed to have shot and wounded two police officers in the city’s Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood Monday night.

The suspect, who has not been identified, allegedly fired at the two officers shortly before 8:30 p.m. and ran off, officials said in a news release.

North Precinct officers were responding to a report of a person with a weapon near Northeast 21st Avenue and Northeast Clackamas Street when a white man in his 30s opened fire on them.

Two officers were hit by bullets, police said. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and are said to be in stable condition.

The suspect fled after the shooting. Multiple agencies — including the Special Emergency Reaction Team, Air Support, and K-9 units — searched the area, but the suspect was not found.

Early Tuesday morning, police said the “initial search” for the suspect had ended. However, the investigation is ongoing, with detectives still gathering information and following leads.

According to two photographs released by police, the suspect has facial hair and was wearing a black baseball cap, a black jacket over a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and black shoes. He was also seen carrying a black backpack and a green shopping bag.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

“This is a stark reminder of the dangers of the job,” Portland Mayor Keith Wilson said at a press conference late Tuesday night. “We’re very concerned for the officers who were shot. We are happy to hear that they are in stable condition, and we wish them a speedy recovery, and we send them our prayers.”
