Two teenage girls riding electric bikes were killed in a hit-and-run car crash in North Jersey on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Cops said a man driving a black SUV through Cranford struck the two girls on a residential street, then fled the scene, WPIX reported. Police later tracked down the driver, who has not been publicly identified, and took him into custody.
The two victims have not been named by police. Officials said they were both students at Cranford High School.
“We join the families, friends and entire Cranford community in mourning the loss of two young women from Cranford High School,” Mayor Terrence Curran wrote on Facebook. “Our hearts go out to all those affected during this time of unimaginable grief. We stand with you in sorrow and solidarity.”
Investigators are still trying to determine if the crash was intentional. One family member told WCBS that the girls knew the SUV driver.
The collision occurred on Burnside Avenue near Lincoln Avenue in Cranford, about 20 miles southwest of Central Park, according to WABC. The speed limit on Burnside Avenue is 25 mph.
Last week, a 13-year-old boy riding an e-bike in Scotch Plains was also killed in a car crash. In that incident, Nico Lombardi was struck by a landscaping truck, which remained at the scene.
