A 28-year-old New Jersey man was struck by lightning on a golf course Tuesday, according to police in Hardyston Township.
The golfer, identified as Simon Mariani of Franklin Lakes, was found “down” on the ground when paramedics responded to a 911 call around 2 p.m. at Ballyowen Golf Club in Hamburg.
Mariani was transported by medivac to Cooperman Barnabas Hospital, according to police. His condition as of Wednesday was unclear.
Fellow golfer Brian Delia told News 12 New Jersey that lightning had been active in the area for roughly 30 minutes before Mariani was struck. Delia said the golf club had sounded an alarm to clear the course, but it was barely audible from where he was standing.
The Centers for Disease Control says a person’s odds of being struck by lightning are less than one in a million.
