Three people were killed and nine others wounded in a mass shooting early Monday morning in South Philadelphia, police said.
The deceased victims were identified only as a 24-year-old man, a 23-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, local CBS affiliate KYW reported.
One person has been detained in connection with the shooting, Philadelphia police said. That person has not been publicly identified, and their exact role in the scene was not clear.
Three juveniles — two 17-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl — were wounded in the gunfire, according to local NBC affiliate WCAU. Six more men were wounded; they ranged in age from 18 to 24. A tenth person was also injured running away from the gunfire.
“Individuals just shooting randomly into houses, into cars,” Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told reporters. “I mean, this is cowardly, wannabe thug stuff.”
Police had been monitoring the block, on South Etting St. in the city’s Grays Ferry neighborhood, throughout Independence Day weekend, according to Bethel. He said several people were arrested on the street for prior incidents.
Cops were responding to a nearby call when the gunfire erupted around 1 a.m., and officers arrived on the scene almost immediately.
Monday morning’s violence was the second mass shooting in Philadelphia over the weekend. Early Saturday morning, eight people were wounded in a shooting outside a nightclub in the city.
