3 shot to death outside Louisville, Ky. DMV, killer at large

Three people were shot to death outside a DMV office in Louisville, Ky. on Friday afternoon, in what authorities are calling a “deliberate act.”

One man was pronounced dead on the scene, while two female victims died at a hospital a short time later, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department. Their names and ages have not been released. It’s unclear if and how they were connected.

The gunfire erupted around noon at a Driver Licensing Regional Office. Witnesses told police they saw “subjects” flee the scene after the shooting, according to local station WLKY.

Investigators said they had no suspects or a description of the vehicle as of Friday afternoon. LMPD Maj. Donald Boeckman told reporters they were still reviewing surveillance camera footage.

“It’s absolutely a tragedy,” Boeckman said. “And I’m surprised there weren’t more people injured. Many people were standing outside.”

He added there was no reason to believe there was any ongoing threat to the public.

The DMV office where Friday’s shooting occurred is one of 34 regional branches in Kentucky. Those offices have recently been filled with frustrated people waiting hours for service, while others have struggled to book appointments, according to WLKY.

It’s unknown if the shooter or shooters were customers. Any relationship to the victims was also unclear as of Friday.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear called the shootings “senseless” in a statement posted to social media.

“I want to thank the brave law enforcement officers who responded quickly to the scene and to our Kentucky Transportation Cabinet team members who worked quickly to protect their fellow Kentuckians,” the governor said. “Let’s pray for the family members of those lost during this difficult time.”
