4 dead in shooting during Mississippi homecoming celebration

Four people were killed and a dozen others wounded when gunfire broke out during homecoming celebrations in the Mississippi Delta region, officials said.

The shooting occurred around midnight on Saturday in Leland, a small town in Washington County with a population of approximately 3,500 people.

Mississippi State Sen. Derrick Simmons said people had gathered downtown after the local football team faced off against Charleston High School on Friday night.

Of those wounded, four were rushed to a hospital in Greenville and then airlifted to a larger medical facility in the state capital city of Jackson, said Simmons, who’s the senator for that region.

No other details were provided, including the specific conditions of those hurt in the gunfire.

Leland Mayor John Lee said he was “deeply saddened” by the deadly violence. He also canceled a scheduled block party on Saturday as a safety precaution.

As of Saturday afternoon, there were no suspects in custody and the investigation into the matter is ongoing.
