San Francisco 49er Keion White was shot following an argument with rapper Lil Baby and his entourage at the football player’s Super Bowl party, according to a police report.
The 27-year-old defensive end was shot in the ankle just after 4 a.m. on Monday at Dahlia Lounge in San Francisco. As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made and no suspect had been publicly identified.
“Our officers are working diligently on this investigation, and we’re following multiple leads,” Evan Sernoffsky, the SFPD’s director of strategic communications, told NBC’s Bay Area affiliate.
Lil Baby, whose name is Dominique Jones, had performed at another post-Super Bowl party in the city earlier that night after attending the big game. Witnesses reportedly told police that the 31-year-old rapper tried to enter White’s private event but started arguing with the footballer when he and his friends were turned away.
According to the police report, obtained by the San Francisco Standard, a witness left to get help from the venue’s staff when they heard two loud bangs. They said they returned to find White had been shot in the left leg. Another attendee said she heard four gunshots but didn’t see who shot White.
Evidence of at least two different types of ammunition as well as an abandoned cellphone were found at the scene. Police also took surveillance footage from the club, which they hope will aid the investigation, despite White allegedly being uncooperative when cops arrived.
The 49ers said on Monday that White had successfully undergone surgery and his injury is not considered to be career-threatening.
While police previously said “a preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups” inside of Dahlia’s, there was have been conflicting reports on White’s involvement.
The Athletic on Monday reported the argument did not involve White, who they said appeared to be minding his own business when he got hit with a bullet.
