84-year-old man punched, kicked after Long Island car crash

A 51-year-old Long Island man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly appeared at the scene of a car crash and proceeded to punch and kick an 84-year-old man, Nassau County police said Friday.

The victim, who has not been identified, was driving his vehicle in Woodmere late Tuesday morning when cops say he struck a Tesla being driven by a 47-year-old woman.

As the two people involved in the crash were exchanging contact information, suspect Sharon Zharfati appeared on the scene and allegedly ripped a notebook from the elderly man’s hands. He’s accused of then punching the victim in his face, causing him to fall to the ground, where Zharfati kicked him in the head before fleeing the scene, cops said.

The victim was treated at an area hospital.

Investigators eventually tracked down Zharfati, who has since been charged with second-degree robbery and assault. He was arraigned on Friday, but did not appear to still be in police custody later in the day.

It’s unclear if the suspect had any connection to either of the people involved in the car crash or why he allegedly became violent.
