A suspect is behind bars for the murder of comedian Reggie Carroll, who was gunned down last week in Mississippi, police in Southaven said.
The Baltimore-based entertainer was 52.
Carroll was shot last Wednesday, and police released his identity on Saturday, though not much else because the investigation was still ongoing. Police confirmed that they had been called to an isolated shooting and found “one male victim suffering from gunshot wounds,” the Southaven Police Department said in a statement. “The officers and medical personnel provided life saving techniques, but the individual succumbed to his injuries.”
Police had not named the suspect as of Monday morning, but said they had made an arrest.
“One male is in custody and has been charged with the murder of Reginald Carroll,” the department said. “Our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Carroll. Thank you to the community for their patience and understanding.”
As news spread, tributes poured in. Comedian Mo’Nique paid homage to her “brother in comedy” in an Instagram story, which Deadline captured, and called his death a reminder to “treat people the best you can because you never know if you’ll get a chance to see them again.”
She also reminisced about the “amazing time” they’d had touring together.
Likewise, the Baltimore comedy club where Carroll first honed his delivery, Club Mobtown Comedy, posted on social media, thanking him for his support.
“Rest in power,” the club posted on Instagram. “The Mobtown family and the Baltimore comedy community are very saddened by this loss of one of our city’s great talents. Sending our prayers to Reggie’s family.”
In addition to touring comedy clubs around the country, Carroll produced and hosted 2023’s comedy special “Knockout Kings of Comedy” and was in a 2000 episode of variety series “Showtime at the Apollo,” according to IMDb.
Carroll’s brothers thanked those who had sent condolences.
“Your love has been well received — thank you!!!” brother Jonathan Carroll posted on social media, also asking people not to share any details until all the facts had been confirmed, “due to the sensitive nature of Reg’s passing.”
Police confirmed that the investigation was ongoing in the Mississippi city, which abuts the Tennessee border and is about 10 miles south of Memphis.
