A man was killed and four others were injured Tuesday afternoon after an SUV crashed into a Planet Fitness in New Jersey.
The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. when the vehicle careened into the gym on Newark Avenue in Elizabeth, about 15 miles west of New York City in Union County.
The man, who was exercising inside, was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others, all Planet Fitness employees, and the woman who was behind the wheel were also taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries.
Neither the identities nor the ages of the driver or the victims had been released as of Tuesday evening.
The cause of the crash was also unclear, though the mayor’s office said “all parties are cooperating” with the ongoing investigation.
Chopper footage obtained by Fox 5 showed the maroon Jeep completely inside the building, surrounded by broken glass and other debris from the damaged windows just to the left of the entrance.
The building sustained structural damage and is closed until further notice.
“At Planet Fitness, the safety of our employees, members, and guests is a top priority, and we are extremely saddened by this tragic accident and loss of life,” Planet Fitness told the Daily News. “Our thoughts are with the member’s family and those impacted during this difficult time, and we are grateful to the first responders who provided immediate assistance.”
