With Thursday night’s victory over the Chicago White Sox, the Yankees tied their season-high win streak.
Home runs from Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. lifted the Yankees to a 10-4 victory, giving the Bombers a five-game win streak.
Bellinger’s two-run homer in the first inning put the Yankees on the scoreboard first. Then, Chisholm’s solo shot and Ben Rice’s RBI single made the score 4-0.
It was a comfortable lead for starter Will Warren, who eventually tallied five hits, four runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
The right-hander did run into trouble in the second, though, as the White Sox managed to load the bases without recording a hit. It led to first baseman Miguel Vargas crushing a grand slam that tied the game, 4-4.
Each of the four runs weren’t charged to Warren since the runners reached on a walk, hit by pitch and Anthony Volpe‘s 18th error of the season.
The tie, though, didn’t last long.
In the fifth, Rice reached on an infield single then another error — this time by Chicago third baseman Curtis Mead — allowed Rice to score from first. Mead attempted to beat out Aaron Judge, but he fired the ball up the line. First baseman Vargas attempted to catch the ball, but instead collided with Judge on the play.
The White Sox later announced Vargas left the game due to a left wrist contusion.
Before the end of that inning, Judge scored on Chisholm’s sacrifice fly to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead.
In the eighth, Volpe later made up for his error with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead. The shortstop went 2-for-3 at the plate while continuing his defensive struggles.
The lead stretch again after Grisham hit a two-run homer in the eighth. The 391-foot shot to right center gave the outfielder his 27th home run of the season and his sixth in the last nine games.
Paul Goldschmidt’s sacrifice fly in the ninth added more insurance and made the score 10-4.
The Yankees’ bullpen pitched four scoreless innings to secure the win.
After securing the series opener against the lowly White Sox, the Yankees look to extend the streak with Carlos Rodon on the mound Friday.
White Sox righty Yoendrys Gomez is scheduled to start for Chicago.
