Robin Wright says fleeing the US has been ‘liberating’: ‘America is a s–tshow’

Robin Wright has no regrets about bidding adieu to the US.

The Golden Globe winner, 59, revealed that she has moved to England — calling her trans-Atlantic relocation “liberating.”

“It’s liberating to be done,” the “House of Cards” actress told The Times of London. “Be done with searching, looking and getting 60% of what you wanted.”

The Texas-born, California-raised star revealed that she and her boyfriend, architect Henry Smith, are currently renting a home on the English seaside, saying they were desperate to leave the US because “America is a s–tshow.”

“I love being in this country,” she said of her new home. “There’s a freedom of self here. People are so kind. They’re living. They’re not in the car in traffic, panicked on a phone call, eating a sandwich. That’s most of America. Everything’s rush, competition and speed.”

The “Forrest Gump” actress added that her decision to move was spurred on by the lifestyle California had offered.

“Everyone’s building a huge house, and I’m just done with all that — I love the quiet. And I’ve met my person. Finally,” she added.

The “Princess Bride” actress also recalled meeting Smith for the first time.

Wright recalled sitting at a pub and asking a man if she could feed his dog. The man, in turn, addressed her now-boyfriend.

“He goes, ‘No, it’s not my dog, it’s his dog,’” she said. “Henry was standing at the bar, 6’2″, and he put his pint down, came over to me and grabbed my shoulders. He goes, ‘Who the f–k are you?’ And I said, ‘Who the f–k are you?’ And that was it.”

“He is a sweetheart and just a good, decent adult. He’s a man,” she said, adding that it’s “so relaxing” to be “seen and loved for who I am.”

“That’s exactly what I wanted,” she added. “I’m turning 60 and I’m, like, ‘Is this it?’ I love being alone and I’ve done that many times. But I’m, like, ‘I want to grow old with somebody, and travel and see the world.’”

The “Here” star was previously married to Sean Penn from 1996 to 2010. The exes share daughter Dylan, 34, and son Hopper, 32.

Elsewhere in the interview, Wright said she “wasn’t hard enough” on her children while they were growing up.

“I have a huge regret as a mother and have experienced the fallout of this regret for many years with my kids — I wasn’t hard enough on them,” she said.

She admitted that while Penn, 65, was much tougher on their kids, he wasn’t as present due to his acting career.

“But he was gone so much of the time,” she said. “He’d come back and be the policeman and then he’d leave me with the residue.”

“Then I would soften the blow. We were both extremes. They didn’t get that grey area in the middle, which is stern, and that is what they needed.”

Following their divorce, Wright went on to tie the knot with Clement Giraudet in 2018. She eventually filed for divorce from the fashion exec in 2022.

The actress also had a brief, ill-fated union with late “Santa Barbara” actor Dane Witherspoon. The pair were married from 1986 to 1988.
