A Long Island teen has been indicted for attempted murder after allegedly shooting two people at a Central Islip apartment complex pool in June, prosecutors said Thursday.
The 15-year-old boy, who hasn’t been named due to his age, is accused of firing at least 10 rounds during a fight between two groups of teens on June 19, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
The incident took place around 4:30 p.m. in the pool area of the Hawthorne Living apartment complex, which is described as a “luxury apartment community in Islip.”
The two groups “engaged in a physical altercation” at the complex’s swimming pool when the defendant pulled a firearm from his backpack and began firing, prosecutors said.
Seven shots struck his intended target, described by Suffolk County police as a 16-year-old male. The other victim was a 25-year-old woman who was accompanying the juvenile victim that day.
Their names have not been publicly released.
The young victim was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip in serious condition, police said. The female victim was transported in serious condition to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore.
Investigators recovered 10 spent shell casings from the scene, as well as multiple stray bullet fragments, one of which entered a nearby apartment, officials said.
The suspect allegedly fled the scene after the shooting but was arrested on Aug. 14 in Amityville, about 13 miles west of Central Islip.
On Tuesday, he was arraigned on an indictment charging him with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and other offenses. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted on the top count and is due back in court on Oct. 21.
“This violence has no place in our community,” Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said Thursday in the news release. “My office will do everything in its power to seek swift justice for the victims.”
