HOUSTON — Jazz Chisholm Jr. had to take himself out of Thursday’s series finale against the Astros, as he suffered contusions to both of his knees on separate plays, the Yankees announced.
While the second play in question was unclear at the time of the team’s announcement, Chisholm appeared to injure his left knee when Jose Altuve attempted to steal second in the third inning. As Altuve slid into the bag, his helmet collided with Chisholm’s knee. While Chisholm was able to apply an inning-ending tag, he hobbled his way off the field. He then struck out in the top of the fourth inning before walking gingerly back to the dugout.
There, YES Network cameras caught Chisholm indicating that he had to come out of the game. He was replaced by José Caballero at second base in the bottom of the fourth.

Chisholm has been one of the best second basemen in baseball this season, slashing .242/.339/.499 with 28 home runs, 70 RBI, 26 steals and a 132 wRC+. He needs just two more homers and four more swipes to become the Yankees’ third member of the 30-30 club.
That feat is in striking distance even though Chisholm already missed a month with an oblique strain this season. Once he returned from that, he essentially stopped trying to steal for 39 games due to a nagging groin injury.
