Sydney Sweeney stuns at TIFF as ‘Christy’ transformation makes debut

Sydney Sweeney is back to bombshell.

The 27-year-old actress made jaws drop at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) on Friday, flaunting her show-stopping curves in a daring pale pink gown and plunging neckline ahead of the world premiere of her newest film, “Christy.”

Sweeney transformed back to her hourglass self after gaining over 30 pounds to play boxing icon Christy Martin in the upcoming sports biography.

The “Euphoria” star ditched her signature blonde locks for a curly, brown mullet to channel the WBC super welterweight champion.

The unrecognizable look was first displayed in October, when images of Sweeney on the Charlotte, North Carolina, set found their way online.

Her incredible physical transformation continued to be on display in the first-look photos from the biopic’s set, showing her channeling Martin, 57.

Sweeney bulked up to take on the role.

She trained for over three months, with her fitness routine including boxing and weightlifting for several hours a day.

She also worked closely with a nutritionist, packing on between 30 and 35 pounds.

The actress refused to use a stunt double for the role, walking away from fight scenes with bruises and concussions during filming.

“Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force. I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits,” Sweeney told Vanity Fair in an interview published on Thursday, Sept. 4.

It was announced in May 2024 that Sweeney would be portraying Martin, who made her boxing debut in 1989.

The biopic, which made its world debut on Friday, will follow all the ups and downs of Martin’s troubling life.

Martin became one of America’s most successful female boxers of the 1990s after taking on Deirdre Gogarty in front of a sold-out crowd at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand in March 1996.

She became the first female boxer to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated the following month. Her photo was featured with the headline, “The Lady Is a Champ.”

Her success almost took a deadly turn when her manager-turned-husband, James, stabbed her several times and shot her in the chest at their Apopka, Fl., home in 2010.

Martin survived the near-death experience, and James was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The boxer later came out as gay and married Lisa Holewyne in 2017.

“The Righteous Gemstones” actor Tony Cavalero plays James alongside Sweeney in the biopic.

Sweeney recently made headlines for her controversial American Eagle ad, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”

Using “jeans” as a double entendre, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”

Critics accused the brand of using a hint of eugenics, which the National Institute of Health describes as “the use of selective breeding to improve the human race,” to describe the blonde-haired, blue-eyed star with its wordplay.

Sweeney shut down all questions about the campaign backlash ahead of TIFF.

“I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans,” she told Vanity Fair. “The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”

Despite the drama, American Eagle’s stock soared nearly 30% higher on Thursday, with executives telling Wall Street analysts that Sweeney brought in record traffic and unprecedented new customers.

Sweeney’s role as Martin is also creating Oscar buzz.

Outlets like Screenrant noted her physical transformation as well as stars in boxing classics like Sylvester Stallone in “Rocky”  (1976), Robert De Niro in “Raging Bull” (1980) and Hilary Swank in “Million Dollar Baby” (2004), scoring Academy Award nominations, with the latter winning for their roles.

If she lands a nomination, it’ll be Sweeney’s first Oscar nod.

The Post’s Johnny Oleksinski gave the film three stars after seeing it at TIFF. He also called it Sweeney’s “biggest and best performance so far.”

“Christy” is set to hit theaters on Nov. 7, 2025.
