Car thief runs over elderly LI woman in Walmart parking lot



An 84-year-old Long Island woman was deliberately run over with her own car by an alleged thief accused of trying to steal the 2013 Subaru Forester from a Walmart parking lot.

Suffolk County police said the victim briefly exited her vehicle to move a shopping cart that was blocking a parking spot when Dareine Heller, 34, jumped into the driver’s seat.

The senior citizen attempted to intervene, but was overpowered during the Thursday morning scuffle in Setauket.

“Heller shoved the victim to the ground, and intentionally ran the victim over with the vehicle, dragging her for a short distance,” police said.

The unidentified victim was taken an an area hospital for injuries police described as “serious.”

Heller allegedly drove off with the victim’s Subaru, which she crashed into a pole, a stop sign, another vehicle and a brick wall before police eventually located and arrested her around 1 p.m.

Charges against Heller, a Holbrook resident, include robbery, assault, causing injury to a victim 65 or older and possession of a controlled substance police didn’t identify.
