Readers sound off on male voters, Trump’s opposition and H.L. Mencken

Trump wins by saying what people want to hear

Bradford, Ontario: The Donald did very well in the election, showing the world that he had a better election preparation team than his opponents. The Republicans had been working for more than three years developing, establishing and initiating their propaganda machine and recruitment drives. Donald Trump’s Republicans won fair and square.

It seems many women voted for the Democrats, while a whole lot of men voted for their guy. What drove America’s men to Republicans? Men like to be the center of attention in all things. Kamala Harris made women her central purpose. Men have a smaller attention span than women. They think primarily about sex, sports, alcohol consumption and sex again. Simply put, many men saw the Democrats berate a guy (Trump) they would like to have a beer with. Trump’s likability with guys was much higher than with ladies, who preferred to center issues like abortion, religion and protecting children. Men saw Trump as an action figure, promising what matters most to men, while Harris seemed like a bitter, henpecking woman.

Trump gave short, simple answers to the American people, often things they can understand, while the Democrats answer to most things was long-winded or not sufficiently presented. Messaging went over many people’s heads and did not center on what Americans wanted most. What was in it for the average American? Trump’s political machine continually asked them what they wanted, while Democrats told the average Joe what they wanted. Now we are stuck with a leader whose vocabulary is that of an 8-year-old, a golfer’s delight and a woman’s terror. A nation’s question persists: What is he going to do next? Steven Kaszab

Pouting pundits

Hubertus, Wis.: I had the joy of watching several weekend news shows like “Deface the Nation” and “Meet the Depressed.” Each commentator had the look in their eyes as if someone let the air out of their electric bicycle tires. One by one, political pundits tried to keep their tone upbeat, but the stark reality of Election Day results slapped them all in the face. Remember, with all of the finger-pointing, three fingers point right back at the problem — themselves! Robert W. Lobenstein

Teflon Don

Astoria: To Voicer Peter Janoff: Harris did not “bravely take the mantle” to run against Trump. Her boss was thrown overboard like ballast when no amount of gaslighting could conceal his rapidly advancing dementia anymore. Nov. 5 was a triumph of democracy and a complete repudiation of the train wreck of the last four years. It was also the power of the people stopping in its tracks the cynically political criminal prosecutions of Trump. The Electoral College, the popular vote (second highest in history), the Senate and almost certainly the House is as clear a political mandate as I’ve seen in my lifetime. This wasn’t a landslide, it was a massacre. With the Supreme Court stacked 6-3 in Trump’s favor and the wider federal judiciary weighted with Trump appointees, that’s all three branches of government. His agenda is virtually bulletproof this time around. So is he, apparently. Bradley Morris

Easy to spot

Bronx: To all the women screeching like banshees and shaving their heads, etc. over the wonderful election of Donald Trump: You are doing a great favor to all the single men out there. It will be easy for them to sort out all the screwballs from the beautiful, sweet and intelligent women before a dime or a second is spent! Great move, girls! Ross de Marco

Soft on crime

Manhattan: Over the next four years, you will be hearing the following said over and over: “What happened to the rule of law?” Well, that’s an easy one. It died on Jan. 21, 2021, when a weak, fearful attorney general failed to arrest Trump for his role in the insurrection. Rightfully realizing that the MAGA crazies would yell and scream that his decision was political, he let Trump off the hook until the House investigators shamed him into opening an investigation — almost two years later. Fearful of seeming political just for doing his job, this woefully inadequate prosecutor made a political decision to not do it at all. The ills in our country can’t be blamed on the right. The weak, ineffective Democratic Party, always fearful of bold action, has enabled them along the way. Steven Fromewick

Scant evidence

Brooklyn: In Sunday’s Daily News, you use an incident of one student (Latino, by the way) in one school who made some jokes about Mexican immigrants to spin the headline “City schools fear spike in anti-migrant rhetoric after Trump election” (Nov. 10). Aside from being grammatically incorrect — schools don’t feel fear, or any emotions, and the opening run-on sentence wouldn’t make it past a sixth-grade English teacher — the story lacks any substance and appears to be an attempt to libel the person who just won the presidency by a landslide. Wake up, Daily News. The handful of readers you have left aren’t stupid. Jack Flynn

Moral low ground

Bronx: This country has no right to criticize or dictate to Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, Cuba or any other countries that are not as hypocritical as the U.S. is. How can we in good faith elect a convicted felon, racist, white supremacist, rapist, mean-spirited, vengeful, lying, self-centered, egotistical, bullying, non-Christian, no-personality demagogue to the office of president? He accomplished nothing positive in his first term and surely will not accomplish anything this time. He will get us deeper into debt by giving undeserved tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy. He will take health insurance away from millions without an adequate replacement. This country will never be great until all citizens are treated fairly and equally, regardless of the color of their skin — obviously not on the MAGA Republican agenda. Alfred Williams

Woke warrior

Massapequa, L.I.: The American people have spoken and roundly disagree with the woke mentality of the Rev. Al Sharpton and the rest of the far left (“Al says Trump foes must ‘mobilize,’ plans D.C. rally on Inauguration Day,” Nov. 10). For the last 30 years, Sharpton has been nothing more than a racial arsonist and extortionist. From the Tawana Brawley rape hoax to the Korean boycott to the DEI extortion of corporate America, Sharpton cares only about enriching himself! It’s time America knocks him off his soap box. Michael Greaney

Careful comedy

New Hyde Park, L.I.: After watching “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, it’s clear that the cast and crew value their jobs more than their beliefs. No big loss for me, the show sucks anyway. Bob Wiecezak

Only the brave

Englewood, N.J.: Some chose to serve and fight for their country. Others chose to sell out to the highest bidder. To those who served, thank you so much. Irene Dikranian

Flawed figure

Flushing: Voicer Richard Siegelman seems to have an infatuation with H.L. Mencken, and lists the reasons Mencken thought he was so much smarter than other Americans. Siegelman neglects to mention that Mencken was an elitist and a racist. Mencken’s opposition to American entry into World War II has been cited as an example of his antisemitism. Another example of his elitism was his opposition to Roosevelt’s New Deal. Mencken was terrified of FDR and his liberalism. He thought democracy was the worship of jackals by jackasses. He relished Mark Twain’s depiction of ordinary townspeople as gullible and ignorant. Mencken called them “boobs.” He also believed representative democracy is a system where the inferior dominate their superiors. That sense of superiority led him to blackball Jews from membership in a Baltimore club. He also said Black women had no discretion or judgment and were childlike. This is Siegelman’s hero? Kevin Fox

Hypocrisy

Manhattan: Re “Eric loses Tex. bus case” (Nov. 9): The chutzpah of the Texas governor is astounding. On Saturday, you reported that Greg Abbott’s response to Mayor Adams’ lawsuit against Texas bus companies was “Adams knows nothing about the constitutional right to travel.” This from a man who governs a state that sued a Seattle children’s hospital demanding records of Texas residents who may have received gender-affirming care there, and whose attorney general wants access to medical records of women who seek out-of-state abortions. I guess the constitutional right to travel does not apply to Texas. Jeffrey Nelson
