Not even Kristin Davis knew “And Just Like That” was coming to an end after the show’s third season.
Davis, who reprised her role as the always optimistic Charlotte York for the “Sex and the City” sequel series, opened up about the story’s abrupt conclusion in a preview for Wednesday’s episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show.”
Barrymore, 50, began the upcoming segment gushing about “And Just Like That” before asking whether Davis knew it was finishing.
“I watched every episode, obviously, until the end,” the CBS talk show host said. “The announcement came out that it was ending, and then I was like, I bet they didn’t know. And is that true?”
Davis, 60, then set the record straight.
“Definitely true,” she revealed. “Didn’t know.”
The “Melrose Place” alum, however, clarified that she and her “And Just Like That” co-stars – including Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw) and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes) – had only signed on for three seasons.
“Our commitment that we had made was a three-year commitment,” Davis explained to Barrymore. “To each other. So we knew that part. But I just assumed that we would keep going. That’s how I am, you know what I mean?”
As the audience clapped for Davis, Barrymore admitted that she “hasn’t known life” without either “Sex and the City” or “And Just Like That.”
Showrunner Michael Patrick King announced that the “Sex and the City” reboot would end after its two-part Season 3 finale in a lengthy Instagram post shared Aug. 1.
“And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the’ Sex And The City’ universe is coming to an end,” King wrote two weeks before the final episode on Aug. 14. “While I was writing the last episode of ‘And Just Like That…’ season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.”
The director added that he and Parker, 60, knew that the franchise was coming to an end – even if its other stars had no clue.
“SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season,” King shared.
Parker, meanwhile, opened up about the surprising decision in an Instagram post of her own.
“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years,” she wrote. “I think I have loved her most of all.”
As for Davis, she reposted King’s official statement and shared her own thoughts about “And Just Like That” coming to an end after three seasons.
“I am profoundly sad,” the actress lamented. “I love our whole beautiful cast and crew. 400 artisans working so hard on our show with deep love. And to our loyal fans, we love you forever and ever.”
But despite King’s announcement, and even though the controversial finale ended on a “crappy” note, one executive producer has not ruled out Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes’ possible returns.
“Well, she’s alive, so it could happen,” Elisa Zuritsky said of Parker’s iconic character last month.
“I am the eternal optimist,” she added. “So I don’t like to be too final about things, and life is long. I mean, we’ve all seen lots of things happen.”
