A Long Island teenager was arrested for trying to bring a loaded gun into Uniondale High School.
The unidentified 17-year-old suspect was apprehended without incident around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
School security reportedly located a black handgun in the teen’s backpack. News 12 said the firearm was stopped at the school’s metal detector.
Tuesday’s incident follows a week of deadly school shootings that saw right-wing activist Charlie Kirk killed while lecturing on a Utah college campus and two Colorado high school students wounded by a 16-year-old gunman, who authorities said took his own life about 20 miles southwest of downtown Denver.
Charges against the Long Island teenager allegedly caught with a gun include criminal possession of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds. Police said his arraignment would take place Thursday at the Youth Part of First District Court. His intentions were unclear.
Police didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry about the suspect’s status at the school.
