A Colorado teen was fatally shot by police after calling 911 and threatening to open fire inside a business and shoot at officers, authorities said late Thursday.
The incident took place in Aurora, just east of Denver. Around 7:30 p.m., police responded to a 911 call about an armed male suspect who had threatened violence inside a business in the 200 block of South Havana Street.
“The 911 caller, who [was] also the suspect in the incident, also threatened to shoot at police officers,” the Aurora Police Department said in a news release.
The suspect, who has not been named, said he was planning to shoot businesses in the area, Fox31 Denver reported, adding he called 911 from a Rocket gas station.
According to police, three officers arrived at the scene and ordered the suspect to show his hands, but he refused.
The officers arrived at the gas station with a rifle, a pistol and a less lethal device that shoots rubber projectiles, Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain said, according to the local NBC affiliate KUSA.
One of the officers then fired the less lethal launcher, authorities said. However, that did not stop the suspect, who ran toward the police.
An officer then discharged a firearm, striking the teen.
After life-saving efforts, the suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No firearms had been located as of late Thursday night, authorities said. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, in accordance with agency policy.
