Three students were stabbed and another student is in custody following an attack at a Pittsburgh high school.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at Carrick High School when the suspect, a 16-year-old, got into a fight with the three victims.
Two students were taken to the hospital with stab wounds to their abdomen. One of the students is in critical condition and the other is in stable condition. The third victim sustained cuts to their hand and was treated at the scene.
The victims range in age from 15 to 18.
“It stemmed from an altercation in the hallway,” Pittsburgh Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz said. “I don’t know exactly how it started. It wasn’t a random … someone stabbing people in the hallway.”
Cruz continued: “At this time, the school is keeping classes on but parents have the option to come pick their students up at any time.”
Police said the suspect was able to bring a small knife into the school by entering through the cafeteria where there are no metal detectors. He was taken to Pittsburgh Police headquarters.
The school went into lockdown and will remain in “secure” status, meaning outside doors will stay locked, officials said.
“Emergency responders and School Police are on site to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the building. We are grateful for the swift action of school staff, School Police, and the City of Pittsburgh’s first responders,” Ebony Pugh, spokesperson for Pittsburgh Public Schools, said.
