Four people, among them three police officers, were hospitalized following a shooting in New Jersey, officials said.
The gunfire broke out in Irvington on Wednesday afternoon while police responded to reports of a man carrying a gun at a motel on Ball Street, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
A police sergeant suffered a graze wound, and he is expected to make a full recovery, sources told NBC New York. Two other officers and a woman, who was not identified, were also injured and rushed to Rutgers University Hospital. They were not shot and their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Additional specifics regarding their conditions were not available
Authorities did not identify a suspect, nor did they provide additional details about the violence.
Gov. Phil Murphy, who returned Wednesday from a six-day economic mission trip to India, said he’d been briefed on the shooting later Wednesday night.
“We are grateful for all who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe,” Murphy said in a statement.
An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
