‘Simpsons’ producers clarify if Mr. Largo died in Season 37 premiere

No, Mr. Largo isn’t dead.

During “The Simpsons” Season 37 premiere on Sunday, Lisa Simpson became a member of Springfield Elementary’s exclusive fashion club — and was surprised to learn that the group is located in music teacher Dewey Largo’s old room.

“We took it over when Mr. Largo died,” Lisa’s classmate Deavin told her.

When Lisa asked for clarification, Deavin said, “Or he has jury duty. It was something dumb.”

But after the episode aired, co-executive producers Cesar Mazariegos and Jessica Conrad clarified to TVLine that Mr. Largo is still alive and well.

“For something like this, I would welcome the riling up if you actually believe that would kill him off-camera,” Conrad told the outlet.

Mazariegos added: “When we killed off Larry the Barfly last year, that was a big discussion. ‘How do we do it? Should it be that guy, or should it be trucker hat guy?’ Anything that’s that big, where there’s a whole episode about it, we for sure think about it.”

“But we usually don’t want to get rid of our characters,” Mazariegos continued. “And it’s such a cartoony world. We know even if Moleman is in a car that explodes, it doesn’t mean he’s dead forever.”

Fans of the show reacted to Mr. Largo’s supposed death on X.

“I didn’t see this coming but did Mr. Largo passed away…” one fan tweeted.

“Mr. Largo Died?! Good Lord! His hatred for music finally did him in!” another fan wrote.

“Mr. Largo died?! Or he had jury duty,” a different viewer said.

The premiere also brought back Marge Simpson after she died in a flash-forward scene during the Season 36 finale.

Sunday’s episode saw Marge bond with Lisa by showing her daughter her favorite TV show, a “Dawson’s Creek”-style series, and letting her try her old ’90s clothes, which leads to Lisa becoming a style icon at her school.

The fashion clique creates a plan to steal vintage clothes from all the moms in Springfield, but Marge helps save the day and gets even closer to Lisa.

“Remember: I’m with you for the long haul. As long as there’s a pond and a ladder, I’ll be there,” Marge tells Lisa, quoting a line from her favorite show.

During the TVLine interview, Mazariegos teased the animated show’s plans for its upcoming milestone 800th episode.

“It will be two separate episodes that will air on the same night. We’re currently figuring out out our big couch gag for it,” the producer shared. “It’s an episode that deals with Marge’s relationship with Santa’s Little Helper; we even look back at the first episode when they got the dog. The way we address [the milestone] is by addressing it in the couch gag.”

“The Simpsons” airs Sundays at 8 pm ET on Fox.
