The New Jersey Attorney General office is investigating a fatal crash that killed two civilian motorists in North Bergen around 11:18 p.m. Sunday. Prosecutors said an unidentified officer was driving behind a motorist who collided with another driver at that time.
“The two civilian drivers were seriously injured in the collision and were later pronounced deceased,” according to the state’s attorney general.
It’s not clear how or if the officer tailing one of the vehicles in the deadly wreck may have been involved in what unfolded. One witness told News 12 he was in his home and heard “like a banging sound, real hard” before firefighters rushed to the crash site.
The North Bergen Police Department closed down traffic in both directions on Tonnelle Avenue because of what cops described on Facebook as a “serious crash” shortly before midnight.
The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability in investigating. Prosecutors said no other information was available in a Monday press release.
