A Connecticut woman has been accused of trying to kill her estranged husband with poisoned wine amid a bitter custody battle involving their 2-year-old child.
Kristen Hogan is facing two counts of attempted murder and one count of interfering with an officer, according to documents released by the Connecticut State Police. She was arrested on Friday and ordered held on $1 million bail during her initial court appearance.
It follows an investigation launched back in August, after the victim was hospitalized and underwent a blood test revealing he had ethylene glycol — a poisonous ingredient found in antifreeze and other household products — in his system. He told authorities he believed Hogan poisoned an opened bottle of wine in their home on Aug. 7. The same day, he had to appear in state Superior Court in Danbury in response to a complaint Hogan filed. According to the arrest warrant, Hogan was supposed to be there too, but she never showed up.
Two days, later he drank the wine and landed in the hospital, where doctors initially believed he was having a stroke.
In subsequent interviews with law enforcement, Hogan admitted she wanted to make the man sick as “payback for being mentally abusive,” according to the police documents. She also denied trying to kill him.
Police said she searched online for chemicals including “potassium cyanide, potassium ferricyanide, citrate- cyanide, potassium, thiocyanate, and monoethylene glycol.” Hogan also allegedly looked up how much of each substance “would kill you” as well as a where they can be purchased.
She’s due back in court on October 10.
