Jets start 0-6 for the third time in team history after losing to Broncos in London

The nightmare start for the Jets continues.

The Broncos (4-2) sacked quarterback Justin Fields nine times, leading to their 13-11 victory against the Jets (0-6) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

This is the third time in team history the Jets have started a season 0-6 (1996, 2020).

Fields and the Jets’ offense were downright putrid against the Broncos. They only managed 32 yards of offense at halftime and Fields completed just 5-of-7 passes for 17 yards. He finished the game 9-of-17 for 45 passing yards.

Gang Green finished with 82 total yards, but it still had a chance to win the game with less than two minutes remaining. But on a 4th and 8, Fields was sacked for the final time and the Broncos got the ball back. Denver then kneeled on the ball twice to run the clock out and get the win.

All the issues the Jets’ offense has been facing this season came to a head on Sunday. Fields held the football too long in the pocket, which translated into multiple sacks. Also, it seemed like Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand and head coach Aaron Glenn were hesitant to throw the ball downfield in long down situations.

The Jets registered the team’s initial first down right before the two-minute warning. They had a chance to score points before halftime, but the Jets urgency.

With one minute remaining before halftime and no timeouts, Breece Hall ran the ball up the middle for five yards. Then Fields was sacked on 2nd and five before he completed a six-yard pass to Josh Reynolds on third down as the clock expired.

The Jets’ defense has been under fire for its play through five games. They entered Sunday’s game against the Broncos 22nd in yards and 31st in points allowed this season. However, Gang Green played arguably its best game of the season on that side of the ball.

Denver recorded just 13 points and one touchdown. The Jets even had their first takeaway of the season early in the first quarter after not registering one during their first five games of the season. On the Broncos’ first possession of the game, Troy Franklin fumbled after he caught a seven-yard pass from Bo Nix and Jets safety Andre Cisco recovered the ball. That turnover led to a 52-yard field goal by Nick Folk that made the score 3-0.

The Jets also registered a safety in the third quarter and took an 11-10 lead after a Quinn Meinerz held Micheal Clemons in the end zone. But Denver took the lead with 5:09 remaining after Will Lutz’s eventual game-winning 27-yard field goal.

The Jets will return to MetLife Stadium next week to take on the Panthers.
