Human remains were uncovered during a gas line excavation in upstate New York, state police said Thursday.
Troopers from the Montgomery barracks responded to a report of human remains found near Sloop Hill Road in the Town of New Windsor, about three miles northeast of Storm King State Park, shortly after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
According to state police, the remains were discovered by crews with Central Hudson Gas & Electric during an excavation “as part of a gas line installation project.”
The area, near the border of New Windsor and Cornwall, was described by a police source as an “old mob dumping ground,” News 12 Westchester reported. The area has been linked to organized crime dating back to the 1950s, the source said.
Central Hudson, a transmission and distribution utility serving about 315,000 electric and 90,000 gas customers in the Mid-Hudson Valley, confirmed that workers uncovered the remains at a New Windsor property that it’s owned since 1954.
State troopers have not released details about the remains or speculated on when they may have been left there, noting the investigation is still in its early stages.
“Additional information will be released as it becomes available,” a police spokesperson said Thursday afternoon.
The Troop F Forensic Identification Unit and the NYSP Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Montgomery are leading the investigation and will review both local and broader cases to help identify the remains, officials said.
