Ja Rule to become grandfather, daughter expecting first child

Ja Rule is already in the mood to be called “Big Poppa” as he welcomes the news of becoming a first-time grandfather.

The Grammy-nominated hip-hop superstar announced on Thursday that his daughter Brittney Aitken and her newlywed husband, Tevin Aitken, are expecting their first child.

“I’m about to be a grandfather,” Ja Rule told Sherri Shepherd on her eponymous daytime talk show. He joked that his new familial title doesn’t “even sound right” since he’s only 49 years old.

Brittney, 30, is the only daughter of the three adult children the “Always On Time” rapper shares with his wife of 24 years, Aisha Atkins.

Ja Rule said that Brittney shared the exciting news with her parents in a “very cute” way.

“She put the sonogram in a box and a card that said, ‘You are now a grandma and grandfather,’” he told Shepherd. “She said, ‘I got a gift for you guys.’ And we thought it was a real gift. I mean that is a real gift, don’t get me wrong! … So we go and open it up, and she has the camera on me to see me and my wifey’s expressions. It was an amazing moment.”

After the Fyre Fest co-founder shared that his preferred grandpa nickname is the same as The Notorious B.I.G.’s 1994 song title, Shepherd presented him with a special present — a custom-made cardigan with the letters “Big Poppa” embroidered on the back.

“I love it,” Ja Rule said, jokingly adding, “Big Poppa is in the building.”
