A 31-year-old woman was killed and 13 other people were injured when a car plowed into a child’s outdoor birthday party near Washington, D.C., Saturday night, authorities said.
The driver, identified only as a 66-year-old man from D.C., initially ran away from the scene but later turned himself in to police, according to the Bladensburg Police Department.
Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, also a D.C. resident, was killed in the crash. Of the 13 injured victims, eight were children between the ages of 1 and 17, cops said.
Six of the children were hospitalized, but only one remained in a medical facility by Sunday afternoon, police said. Five injured adults were also treated at a local hospital, where three remained in stable condition Sunday, authorities said.
No charges have yet been filed against the driver, and police said they were still investigating exactly what led to the accident.
The party was being held on a street in Bladensburg, Md., just northeast of Washington, D.C. Photos from the scene showed a sedan had slammed into a white tent in the front yard of a home.
Cops said the vehicle was traveling from Annapolis Road, a major thoroughfare through Bladensburg that connects to several smaller streets.
