Eric Dane to play ALS patient on ‘Brilliant Minds’ after shocking diagnosis

Eric Dane is exploring his journey with ALS in a new TV role.

The “Euphoria” star, who announced his diagnosis with the neurodegenerative disease earlier this year, is set to guest star as a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in the NBC medical drama “Brilliant Minds” next month.

Dane, 52, will appear in the ninth episode of the show’s current second season, which is scheduled to air Nov. 24, per The Hollywood Reporter.

His character, Matthew, was described as a firefighter who struggles to share his diagnosis with his family before turning to neurologist Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) for help.

The Post has reached out to Dane and NBC’s reps for comment.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum’s upcoming role in the Michael Grassi-created series comes after he revealed he was diagnosed with ALS in a statement to People on April 10.

“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he shared at the time. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of ‘Euphoria’ next week,” he added. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

Dane has remained outspoken about his shocking diagnosis, and he opened up about his battle with the debiliating disease during an appearance on “Good Morning America” in June.

“My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,” he revealed. “[My left arm] is going. I feel like maybe in a couple more months, I won’t have my left hand either. It’s sobering.”

The “Charmed” alum caused concern last month when he was mysteriously absent from the 2025 Emmy Awards and missed out on presenting an award alongside former “Grey’s” co-star Jesse Williams (Dr. Jackson Avery) in honor of the hit medical drama’s 20th anniversary.

Dane, however, later explained that he had lost his balance shortly before the ceremony and split his head open.

“ALS is a nasty disease,” he told The Washington Post in an interview published Oct. 2. “So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head.”

Although Dane admitted that he was “really upset” about missing the biggest night in TV, he acknowledged that “there was nothing I could do about it.”

“I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to,” he told the outlet. “It would have been great to see Jesse and get reunited with some of my peers, and to be able to present in front of my colleagues, I thought, would have been a special moment.”

Most recently, Dane vowed to “fight to the last breath” during a meeting with lawmakers in Washington, DC, earlier this month.

“ALS is the last thing they want to diagnose anybody with,” the “Gideon’s Crossing” alum said in a TikTok video while promoting his work with the I AM ALS nonprofit organization.

“So often, it takes all this time for these people to be diagnosed; well, then it precludes them from being a part of these clinical trials,” Dane continued. “That’s why ACT for ALS is so great, and it’s because it broadens the access for everybody.”

Days after leaving DC, Dane was spotted struggling to get into his wheelchair at Toronto Pearson Airport on Oct. 16.

But the “Countdown” actor isn’t letting the disease get him down, an insider told Daily Mail last week.

“He wants to enjoy what he has now because he now knows with his full heart that tomorrow isn’t promised,” the source said.

“He wants to live life and he doesn’t want people grieving him or for him while he is going through this terrible disease, he just wants the people in his life to be present and as happy as they can be, he wants to always surround himself with positivity, that is a major thing that is driving him nowadays,” they added.

Dane and his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, share two daughters: Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13. Gayheart, 54, revealed how Dane’s ALS battle has been affecting her and their daughters last month.

“I mean, it’s heartbreaking,” she told People. “My girls are really suffering, and we’re just trying to get through it. It’s a tough time.”

“We have some professional therapists who are helping us,” she added, “and we’re just trying to have some hope and do it with dignity, grace and love.”
