American man charged with estranged wife’s murder in Madrid

A Florida businessman has been charged with killing his estranged wife in an apartment she rented in Madrid to get away from him.

David Knezevich, 36, had already been arrested and accused of kidnapping his wife, Ana Henao Knezevich. She disappeared from an apartment building in the Spanish capital in early February and has not been seen or heard from since.

Knezevich, who has been detained in the U.S. since May, was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury in Broward County, Fla. on charges of kidnapping resulting in death, foreign domestic violence resulting in death and foreign murder of a U.S. national.

Ana Knezevich, 40, moved to the Madrid apartment in December 2023, according to her family. She was seeking space away from David Knezevich as they worked through divorce plans and split up their assets, including several South Florida properties, relatives said.

But on Feb. 2, she disappeared from the apartment and has not been seen since. That same day, a man was captured on surveillance video at the building spray-painting over a security camera, police said. The man was wearing a motorcycle helmet, and was later seen wheeling a suitcase out of the building.

Knezevich was in Europe at the time, investigators said. He flew from Miami to Turkey and then to Serbia in late January, then rented a Peugeot and drove to Spain.

He was seen at a Madrid store buying the same brand of spray paint used at his wife’s apartment on Feb. 2, according to police. He also purchased duct tape at the time.

When Knezevich returned the Peugeot in Serbia, it had traveled nearly 5,000 miles, had tinted windows and featured new license plate holders, according to the rental car company.

Knezevich’s attorney said he will plead not guilty to all charges. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
