Bridgeport police investigate death of woman found in street

Police in Bridgeport, Conn., were investigating Wednesday after finding a severely injured woman lying in the street, with her unharmed 1-year-old baby alone on a porch nearby.

Officers responding to a report of an abandoned baby at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday discovered the child’s mother, 24-year-old Evelyn Rayo-Mairena.

“Officers were initially dispatched to Black Rock Avenue on a report of an abandoned child on the front porch of a house,” Det. Jeffrey Holtz told WFSB-TV and other local outlets. “They located the child and then found the mother injured on the street a short distance away.”

The baby was brought to Bridgeport Hospital for evaluation.

First responders performed CPR on Rayo-Mairena and rushed her to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where she later died, police spokesperson Shawnna White told the Connecticut Post. Autopsy results were pending Wednesday from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

“Police are not providing details of the victim’s injuries at this time,” Holtz said. “Homicide detectives have been working the case throughout the night and are following several leads.”
