Six Flags America closes after 50 years in Maryland


After more than 50 years in Maryland, amusement park Six Flags America closed its gates for good on Sunday.

“Thank you, Six Flags America fans, for 50 years of family fun. We will always cherish the memories made together,” the Bowie, Md. park wrote on social media, along with a blue heart emoji.

The Prince George’s County attraction opened in 1974 as The Wildlife Preserve, a drive-thru safari. After numerous changes in ownership and concept, until it was turned into a Six Flags theme park in 1999.

The company announced the theme park and attached water park Hurricane Harbor would shut down in May.

CEO Richard A. Zimmerman said the company would “generate the highest value and return on investment” if the property was redeveloped, according to a press release.

At the time the company said the employees of the closed park would receive severance and other benefits.

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce joined a group of investors in Six Flags last month.

Six Flags merged with Cedar Fair in July 2024 and now operates some of the most-popular amusement parks in the country, including Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, Kings Dominion in Richmond, Va. and Cedar Point in Ohio.
