Ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 85, to retire from Congress after nearly 40-year career

WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she won’t seek reelection at the end of her current term, ending a roughly four-decade career in Congress for the key Democratic power player who had been the first female speaker.

“I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know I will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” Pelosi, 85, said in a video message to her constituents.

The Golden State Democrat had faced speculation this week that she was planning to announce her plans to skip reelection following Tuesday’s off-year elections.

Pelosi had been the top House Democrat from 2002 to 2022, and served as speaker between 2007 and 2011 as well as 2019 and 2023.
