All we stand to lose with Mamdani is our fear
New Rochelle, N.Y.: It pains me to read so much doomsday forecasting due to a Muslim man being elected mayor of NYC. It feels to this old American veteran, lover of our history who’s proud of our accomplishments, that the Democratic Party is not prepared to consider itself a social democratic party. Zohran Mamdani has few of the characteristics of Karl Marx or Friedrich Engels. He seems to be a decent man with honest intentions.
I wonder how the hell we survived all these years under poor, sometimes obscene leadership and still have no true understanding of what democracy is and isn’t. The Democratic hierarchy must provide Mamdani with the best support in key areas, including a team of freedom-loving, Constitution-abiding advisors and a legal team that can thwart the evil intentions of our current political-industrial complex. I should not have to advise the talented readers of what I consider America’s paper for the common citizen that there are great defenders of freedom in the European Union who feed, clothe, medicate and employ their citizenry. Sit Mamdani down and have him learn what these great people have accomplished.
Look, Jesus has taught us that the poor will always be among us. Let’s see if we can hold together our city’s assets, including the stock market. I recall the sad debate between Jesus and Pontius Pilate that centered around the punishment of a brilliant, beloved man. The question of “what is truth” came up, and led to pain followed by death. Let us support the many good citizens who voted for Mamdani. The man has shined the light on oft-unspoken truth for this city. Warren D. Gross
Self-inflicted
Yonkers: With the election of Mamdani, New York has not just shot itself in the foot, it has pierced its own heart. The deadly failure that he represents — socialism, Marxism, communism — is ignored by the nescient somnambulists who paradoxically call themselves “woke.” When the bill comes due for all of the “free stuff” promised by Mamdani and his kakistocracy-in-waiting, and its societal enervation becomes impossible to deny, they can no longer look to blame President Trump. They need only to look in the mirror. James McCaffrey
Surging socialism
Howard Beach: There are now three political parties in America: Democrats, Republicans and socialists. And unlike your traditional parties, the socialists have no use for the Republicans or Democrats. A perfect example was the New York City mayoral race. Three candidates ran. Andrew Cuomo (although he ran independently) is a member of the Democratic Party. But Mamdani is a socialist. I predict that we’ll see more socialists running for office in big cities throughout the United States. The problem is that socialism is not the American way. With the Democrats fighting with the Republications, the socialists will fight with both parties, and are growing stronger with all these immigrants entering the U.S. who do not believe in the American way. We are in serious trouble. You wait and see what happens as time goes on. Nick Di Pasquale
Zombie candidate
Brooklyn: Mayor Adams decided on Sept. 28 that he was dropping out of the race for mayor. That meant he was giving up his right to run for reelection. Yet, on Election Day, 4,790 people still voted for him. Can someone explain the logic to me? Because I think it’s insane that people voted for someone who dropped out of the race. John De Angelo
Buried opposition
Brooklyn: Unsolicited advice to Cuomo: You should start legal action against the NYC Board of Elections. Demand a new election. The only problem is trying to find an impartial judge who doesn’t owe his job to an elected official that has a “D” next to their name. The party-controlled Board of Elections had to have wanted to hinder Cuomo’s chances of winning by placing his name eighth, in the second row, buried where voters had to search to see his name. Both Mamdani and Curtis Sliwa were listed twice in the boxes above Cuomo’s name. Even Adams’ name was listed above Cuomo’s, and he dropped out weeks ago. Please don’t tell me it was too late to design new ballots. That only takes 24-48 hours. When it comes to trickery, you can always count on the Democrats. NYC will get the mayor it deserves. Glenn Brown
Lose gracefully
Brooklyn: The voters clearly indicated their preference all over the nation. Two of the losing candidates clearly stood out by the way they acted. Jack Ciattarelli, as well as one of the candidates in the Georgia election, showed class in their defeat. They exhibit the American sense of fair play. I hope that Cuomo shows the same class. All candidates for public office should follow this example. Alan Podhaizer
Non-existent statute
Brooklyn: To Voicer Edwin Garcia: You are confused. A person can not be arrested for being antisemitic, but can be arrested for committing a hate crime against Jews. Hate crimes against individuals of any group are prosecuted under the same law. There is no special antisemitism law. Lawrence Freedland
Common cents
White Plains, N.Y.: In typical Trump fashion, he announced in February that pennies would no longer be minted, with no guidance from the government. How well has that been working out? A nickel for your thoughts. Randi Bernstein Feigenbaum
Callback king
East Meadow, L.I.: To Voicer John M. Corbett: In response to your complaint regarding seeing Barack Obama’s “mug” in the news all the time, why don’t you take a minute and go over some of the orange man’s speeches in the last few months and see how many times he brings up the names Biden, Kamala and Obama? Ralph Nuzzo
Laughable
Manhattan: I laughed so hard at Voicer Fred A. Stock’s wildly amusing letter. I’m assuming he meant it to be funny, as it can’t possibly be taken seriously. Stock’s description of Trump as a real president, “finally,” and his administration as courageous just cracked me up. Stock should have his own comedy show. He could wear an orange wig and speak about his idol’s moral and ethical righteousness. Oh heavens, even better than Jimmy Kimmel. I can’t stop laughing. You have outdone yourself, Mr. Stock. I award you the Comedy Star of the Year 2025. Congratulations! Marcia Epstein
Gender-bending
Garrison, N.Y.: In “Massapequa, L.I., schools blocked from enforcing transgender bathroom ban” (Oct. 18) you used a phrase that absolutely drives this Voicer up the proverbial wall. “Sex assigned at birth” is nonsensical gaslighting. Sex is not assigned at birth, it is recognized. Your language suggests that the attending doctor makes an arbitrary decision as to what the baby’s sex is. The article also stated that only parents have complained about these policies. No girl wants to share a bathroom or locker room with a guy in a dress. They have been bullied into silence and don’t open their mouths because they don’t want to get bad grades or be ostracized by their peers who have bought into this ridiculousness. The boy in “Kindergarten Cop” got it 100% correct: “Boys have a penis, girls have a vagina.” Anything else — everything else — is a lie. Michael J. McDonough
Ghost outage
Flushing: On June 24 at 5 p.m., my street lost electric power. Every four hours, Con Ed texted that they were working on it. I went to our transformer on 190th St. several times. No crew was there. At 12:20 a.m. on June 26 (30 hours later), we were back on. I filled out the claim form on the Con Ed site, and 60 days later was told, “You were never out.” So I went to see my Assembly member, Nily Rozic, and was told 30 days later, “If Con Ed said you were out, you were out.” My question is where do I go from here? Drink responsibly
Rockaway, N.J.: Re “Cruise line ‘sold danger,’ ” (Nov. 2): Being on many cruises, I’m sure she was served by different bar servers throughout the day. However, the daughter who says she never saw her mother that drunk — how come she didn’t take some responsibility and cut her off? This is a sad story, but looking to pass the blame to the cruise line is not fair. Michael Ilardi
