1 worker dead, 2 hurt in Cape Cod, Mass. trench collapse

One person died and two were injured in a trench collapse Tuesday at a Massachusetts work site.

The incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. in front of The Skipper Restaurant and Chowder House in Yarmouth on Cape Cod.

Yarmouth Fire Chief Enrique Arrascue said the workers were part of a sewer construction project.

Emergency crews arrived and found one of the workers was buried up to their waist. “And then another person that had heroically jumped in, in an attempt to rescue and help, and he also got himself in part of the trench collapse,” Arrascue said.

The second worker was able to get themselves out and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital. The person who was partially buried took several hours to rescue and was flown to Rhode Island Hospital trauma center around 2 p.m.

“We had a lot of collapse in the trench that continued to happen as we tried to remove him,” Arrascue said.

The body of the deceased worker was recovered before 3 p.m. No further details were provided.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said it was investigating the incident.
