Arrest made in shooting that killed Monroe basketball player

A Long Island teenager has been arrested and charged with murder in a triple shooting that killed a Monroe University basketball player and wounded two young men, authorities announced Wednesday.

Jacob McMillan, an 18-year-old Baldwin resident, is accused of fatally shooting Amira McCleod, a 19-year-old Queens native, at a party on Nov. 22 in Hempstead, Nassau County police said in an alert.

Cops said McMillan was part of a small group that arrived at a house party after 10:30 p.m. that night, News 12 Long Island reported. As the group arrived, the party host wanted to make sure no one brought a weapon inside, police said.

Investigators said the dispute led to a brief altercation, then McMillan backed away and opened fire into a crowd with a handgun, according to WCBS. He fired three bullets, which struck three different people, authorities said.

McCleod, a starter on the Monroe University-Bronx Express women’s basketball team, was killed in the gunfire. Two 20-year-old men who attended Nassau Community College were wounded in the shooting. The party was hosted by NCC students.

McMillan was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and two weapons crimes, police said. He was also charged with second-degree burglary in another case from September.

Earlier on the day of the shooting, McCleod and Monroe-Bronx defeated Duchess Community College, 67-44. McCleod tallied two points, four rebounds and four steals in the game.
