Devin Williams heard the Bronx cheer from Yankees fans for most of the 2025 season. Now, he may have gotten the last laugh on his way out the door to Flushing.
Shortly after signing his three-year, $51 million contract with the Mets on Wednesday, Williams took to social media to take a shot at the fans who booed him throughout his ugly 2025 campaign.
“For a bunch of people that didn’t want me back on your team, [y’all] sure are mad in the [DMs],” Williams wrote on Instagram, adding a laughing emoji at the end.
Williams, 31, donned the pinstripes for just one season after being traded by the Brewers in a December 2024 deal that sent Nestor Cortes and Caleb Durbin to Milwaukee. The veteran came in with the reputation of being one of the most dominant relievers in the game, owning a 1.83 ERA during his six seasons with the small-market Brewers. However, things didn’t go to plan with the Yanks.
After playing a role in getting the Yankees’ longstanding facial hair policy removed, Williams didn’t perform anywhere near the back of his baseball card. The right-hander posted a 4.79 ERA in 67 games and was demoted from the closer role in April. And when you don’t perform to expectations in the Bronx, you will hear boos and the two-time All-Star and two-time NL reliever of the year certainly got the brunt of the fans’ wrath last season.
Williams, who is known for his ‘airbender’ changeup, rebounded a bit late, posting a 3.89 ERA in his final 41 games. He also didn’t allow a single run in his four postseason innings against the Red Sox and Blue Jays.
It’s unclear if the anger in Williams’ direct messages he wrote about is because Yankees fans are upset he left their team — despite the roller coaster season — or simply because he went to the Mets.
However, the book is now closed on Williams’ time in pinstripes as he heads to the Mets on a relatively lucrative contract after a down season. As it stands right now, Williams is set up to be Carlos Mendoza’s closer with Edwin Diaz still on the free agent market. But reports indicate that the Mets are still interested in bringing back the trumpets to Citi Field.
