Mamdani decries America’s ‘epidemic of gun violence’ after Brown U. shooting

In the wake of Saturday’s Brown University mass shooting, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, in a lengthy post on X, decried America’s “epidemic of gun violence” — pointedly noting it was the day before the 13th anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre.

In that infamous shooting, a troubled young gunman killed 26 people, including 20 elementary school children in Connecticut.

The shooter at the Providence, R.I., Ivy League school killed two and injured at least eight.

There’s a “cure” for the horrific violence, the incoming mayor said — though not explicitly referring to gun control laws.

“Two people were killed this evening at Brown University by a gunman who remains at large,” Mamdani posted. “Eight others are injured, fighting for their lives in a nearby hospital. This senseless violence — once considered unfathomable — has become nauseatingly normal to all of us across our nation. Tonight, on the eve of the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting, we find ourselves in mourning once again.

“The epidemic of gun violence stretches across America,” he continued. “We reckon with it when we step into our houses of worship and out onto our streets, when we drop our children off at kindergarten and when we fear if those children, now grown, will be safe on campus. But unlike so many other epidemics, we possess the cure. We have the power to eradicate this suffering from our lives if we so choose.”

“…May we never allow ourselves to grow numb to this pain, and let us rededicate ourselves to the enduring work of ending the scourge of gun violence in our nation.”

Meanwhile, outgoing Mayor Eric Adams prides himself on the fact that, under his watch, the NYPD has taken around 24,000 illegal guns off the street, helping drive down shootings and homicides during his administration to historic lows.
