Hollywood reeled Monday at the news that acclaimed director Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer Reiner had been found stabbed to death a day earlier in their Los Angeles home.
A family member was reportedly being questioned; People reported that it was their son Nick and that their daughter had discovered their bodies, but police were mum on details Monday. The family confirmed their deaths.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family spokesperson told Variety in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a request for medical aid at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday. Paramedics arrived to find two bodies, that of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, in a home that property records showed was owned by Reiner.
Soon after, numerous sources confirmed that the pair were Reiner, 78, and his wife, 68. In a late-night press conference, Los Angeles Police Department chief of detectives said that no one was in custody and they had not identified a suspect. Sources close to the case told TMZ their throats had been slit, possibly following a heated argument.
Reiner’s longtime friends and fellow performers Billy Crystal and Larry David were seen outside the couple’s home, People reported. The 77-year-old actor and 78-year-old comedian arrived separately, according to a neighbor, who told ABC News that Crystal “looked like he was about to cry.” The neighbor also said that the Reiner’s daugher lived across the street with her children in a house the family also owned.
One of Reiner’s last conversations was with Eric Idle, who said on X that they spoke at length by phone mere hours before the director’s death.
“Rob Reiner was a lovely man. I spoke to him last night for over an hour,” Idle wrote. “This is so awful. I shall miss him. A clever, talented and very thoughtful man. So awful.”
